Senator McCain needed to be standing up for the Constitution and speaking out with integrity way way waaay before now. Two years ago, US democracy and sovereignty was positively desperate for it! And it would’ve done the citizenry a world of good in 2008 as well. McCain and his sidekick Palin began paving the way even then for the current crisis of alt-news and for executive branch  attacks on a free press.

He silently stood by as Palin insinuated obvious fear-mongering non-facts about then presidential candidate Obama.  He silently stood by as she lashed out at or mocked journalists when they questioned for her statements.  (For God’s sake, he even stood silently by as Palin slammed the media for asking her what magazines she read!)

Thereafter, McCain and his fellow GOPers spent 10 long years pushing and pandering to fear, ignorance, obstruction, misinformation, and lazy dismissal of facts and science (especially via their propaganda arm, Fox News). Now, for almost 2 years, they’ve been rolling over for Trump, *ignoring his utter lack of concern for or knowledge of the rule of law, Constitution or US and world affairs, *covering & abetting treason, and *failing their duty as check/balance to him. He is their own creation!

McCain’s inability to stand loudly and firmly against Trump and against the GOP/Fox News/Team-Trump promotion of bigotry, alt facts, and destructive conspiracy theories – for so many years – has done immeasurable damage to our country. What is more, he and his GOP have been complicit in a decade-long Fox News attack on our free press! Fox News’ passive-aggressive indirect labeling of all other news organizations as ‘UNfair and UNbalanced’ is simply a more subtle form of Trump’s juvenile “fake news!” tweets.

I surely hope McCain will keep speaking out for our free press, and also for our other Constitutional protections while he’s at it. I surely hope that he will once again act in strength, honor, and knowledge. And I surely hope he is not a decade too late!  It is hard not to suspect, however, that by deciding to speak -at this too late hour – McCain is really just engaged CYA and even imagining an eventual role as hero . . .
